My name is Miss Pliener. I am the Religious Education (RE) leader at MCPA. RE plays a vital role in helping children understand and appreciate the diverse world around them. It nurtures respect, empathy, and curiosity - qualities that are essential in today’s inclusive society. Through exploring different beliefs, values, and worldviews, our pupils learn about others, while reflecting on their own thoughts and experiences. I am passionate about creating a safe and thoughtful space where children can ask big questions, think deeply, and develop their own sense of identity and belonging.
British Values
British Values are explored and promoted in meaningful ways. Pupils learn about a wide range of faiths, beliefs, and worldviews, which encourage tolerance and mutual respect for those with different backgrounds. Democracy is reflected in classroom discussions, where children are encouraged to share their views and listen to others, fostering open-mindedness and critical thinking. As pupils explore moral questions and ethical dilemmas, they gain an understanding of the rule of law and how it applies across cultures and religions. Through learning about individual beliefs and values, pupils also reflect on their own individual liberty: developing a sense of identity while respecting the rights and freedoms of others.
Cultural Capital
Our RE curriculum plays a key role in building pupils’ Cultural Capital. Through the study of a wide range of religions, worldviews, and cultural traditions, children gain a deeper understanding of the world around them and the diverse communities within it. They explore how belief systems influence people’s values, choices, celebrations, and ways of life- both historically and in the modern day. Pupils engage with stories, artefacts, places of worship, and key figures from different faiths, helping them develop empathy, respect, and global awareness. This knowledge and understanding equip them to participate thoughtfully in our multicultural society and to appreciate the richness and complexity of the world beyond their immediate experience.
SMSC
Spiritual Education in RE involves exploring the search for meaning, the purpose of life, and the values by which we live. By learning about a variety of religious traditions and understanding why people believe, students are given the opportunity to reflect on their own spirituality, interpret their experiences, and consider ultimate questions about life.
Moral Education in RE helps students understand both shared and differing moral values from religious and secular perspectives. It provides opportunities to debate complex moral dilemmas around right and wrong, good and bad, and encourages students to consider their responsibilities toward the world and others.
Social Education in RE involves exploring the similarities and differences among religions and cultures, helping students connect faith with personal actions in everyday life. This is reflected in their relationships with others through activities such as discussion, debate, and cooperative work.
Cultural Education in RE includes learning about diverse religious traditions, helping students understand what it means to belong, become confident in themselves, and respond positively to the similarities and differences within our multi-ethnic and multi-faith society.
Personal Development
Religious Education supports the development of knowledge, skills, and understanding needed to explore truth, morality, and humanity. It builds students’ capacity to make moral judgements and evaluate different commitments, empowering them to make positive and healthy choices. RE encourages pupils to ask challenging questions about life, belief, right and wrong, and what it means to be a ‘good’ human being.
Through MCPA’s RE curriculum, pupils gain knowledge and understanding of principal religions, comparing and contrasting religious traditions and worldviews. Promoting each pupil’s self-worth is a key part of our approach. We support children in reflecting on their uniqueness, sharing feelings and emotions, and appreciating the importance of positive relationships to build a supportive school community.
At MCPA, we believe RE helps pupils develop a strong sense of identity and belonging. It enables them to flourish both individually and as members of diverse communities locally and globally. RE encourages learning from different religions, beliefs, values, and traditions while exploring personal beliefs and questions of meaning. Ultimately, RE plays a vital role in preparing pupils for adult life, employment, and lifelong learning by fostering respect, sensitivity, acceptance, and understanding of others.
