Miss Pliener

My name is Miss Pliener, and I am the curriculum leader for History at MCPA.
I have always had a passion for History, and love how it can be brought to life through archaeological evidence, artefacts, role play, and the use of primary and secondary sources. History helps children understand their place in the world and inspires them to become critical thinkers who question the information they are given and ask relevant, meaningful questions.

British Values

British values are embedded throughout our History curriculum. Children explore concepts such as democracy, linking the past to the present through topics like Ancient Greece, The Royal Family, and The Changing Role of the Monarchy. This helps them understand how society has evolved over time and the impact those changes continue to have today.

By learning about the lives and achievements of significant historical figures, our pupils gain a deeper understanding of how individuals have shaped the country we live in. Throughout the curriculum, children are taught to respect and value diversity by studying different cultures, beliefs, and communities - a core theme that reflects our inclusive ethos. There are also regular opportunities to collaborate and learn alongside others.

Cultural Capital

Through high-quality teaching and the use of engaging historical sources, children build knowledge and skills that develop their cultural awareness. Topics such as Ancient Greece, Rome, and Early Islamic Civilisations introduce our pupils to a range of world cultures, allowing them to explore and reflect on similarities and differences with their own. This broader understanding supports their success in society, future careers, and the wider world.

SMSC

Our History curriculum provides rich opportunities for children to grow spiritually, morally, socially, and culturally.
Pupils learn about a wide range of beliefs and how they have shaped the world today. They consider moral questions and dilemmas, examining events from the past that challenge our modern values and perspectives. Children also explore how different societies have influenced British culture, and how Manchester’s history connects with the UK, Europe, and the wider world. Through this, they develop a deeper understanding of our multicultural society and the world around them.

Personal Development

History is the story of human experience. It feeds our human need for stories about who we are and where we’ve come from.

At MCPA, History is the study of change. It helps pupils learn from the past to make sense of the present and to shape a better future. Our curriculum encourages children to think critically about how the past has influenced the world today, equipping them with the knowledge and skills they will need for life beyond MCPA.

We aim to spark curiosity by motivating children to explore beliefs, dilemmas, and decisions from the past.

We proudly embrace the diversity of our school community. Our goal is to help pupils grow into balanced, reflective, and confident individuals, ready for the next stages of their education and understanding their place in the wider world.
