My name is Miss Pliener  and I am the curriculum leader for Geography at MCPA. The most rewarding thing about leading geography is helping the students to realise that there is a huge world out there to be discovered. Geography helps us to develop an appreciation and understanding of different people, places, cultures and environments so that we become much more open-minded. Our geography curriculum is designed to inspire a curiosity in pupils about the world and its people. We want to develop our children’s identity by enabling them to view their place in our world through studies of our local area, the vibrant city of Manchester, the UK, Europe and beyond.

British Values

Democracy -  At MCPA, pupils are encouraged to express their ideas and opinions about important geographical issues such as pollution, climate change, water usage, and globalisation. We create a safe environment where every voice is valued and where pupils learn to listen respectfully to others. Through class discussions and debates, children build confidence in sharing their views and understand the importance of democratic decision-making.

Rule of Law - Children explore different codes for living around the world and learn about the importance of laws that treat everyone fairly. Within Geography, pupils are given opportunities to reflect on global agreements, such as those made during climate change conferences , and to evaluate their outcomes. This helps them understand how rules, laws, and shared goals guide people and protect the environment.

Individual Liberty -  Pupils are encouraged to develop their own interests and follow their curiosity in Geography. They are supported in making choices about what to investigate further, such as different careers related to the subject. As they compare places and communities around the world, children also learn about the rights and freedoms of people living in different environments, and reflect on what individual liberty looks like in different contexts.

Mutual Respect -  Respect is woven into every geography lesson. When children learn about different countries and cultures, they are encouraged to value diverse opinions, traditions, and ways of life. Through class discussions and group work, pupils share their ideas and listen to others. They learn to question stereotypes, explore what it means to be British, and show respect for people from all backgrounds.

Tolerance - Through the Geography curriculum, children explore how people live, work, and believe in different parts of the world. They consider how places have changed over time to meet the needs of diverse societies. By learning about different cultural traditions and environments, pupils develop empathy, open-mindedness, and a deeper understanding of the world around them.

Cultural Capital

The Geography curriculum at MCPA is enriched with extra-curricular activities designed to enhance the learning experience of our learners and increase their cultural capital.. Children take part in fieldwork, local area studies, and trips that allow them to apply their geographical skills in real-world contexts.

Spiritual - Geography offers many opportunities for spiritual development by encouraging children to reflect on their own values, beliefs, and sense of place in the world. Through exploring topics such as natural disasters, diverse cultures, and different environments, pupils are invited to consider what it might feel like to live in different parts of the world.

Moral - Many geographical topics raise moral questions that encourage pupils to think critically about right and wrong. For example: Should deforestation be allowed in the rainforest? Should countries be doing more to reduce carbon emissions? These discussions help children explore human impact on the environment and the ethical decisions involved in managing natural resources and development.

Social - Geography helps pupils understand the society they live in and their role within it. Group work, fieldwork, and collaborative projects develop communication and teamwork skills, as pupils learn to work together to gather data, present findings, and solve problems. Children also explore wider social issues such as trade, urban planning, population growth, and sustainable development, helping them understand how communities function at both local and global levels.

Cultural -  A key part of Geography is understanding different places, people, and traditions. By learning about their own local area and comparing it with contrasting regions in the UK and across the world, children gain insight into a wide range of cultures and ways of life. They explore how culture and environment influence one another, and develop respect for diversity within a modern multicultural society.

Personal Development

At MCPA, we use Geography to help pupils build a global perspective. Our rich and varied curriculum encourages curiosity and fascination about the world. Pupils explore diverse places, cultures, resources, and environments while also developing practical skills such as map reading, data collection, and critical thinking.
